Day One

“Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God–children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.”  ~John 1: 12-13

If you believe in Jesus Christ and his saving work on the cross, you are now a child of God.  You belong to him.  And with this belonging comes the ability to share in all the joys and privileges of a Father/daughter relationship.

If you are a mother, think back with me–if you will–to those first moments or hours after your child’s birth. What did you feel?  My guess is that it doesn’t take much to conjure up the powerful and overwhelming feelings of love, awe, and responsibility you had for this beautiful child.  That child belonged to you–and with that belonging came a fierce love which you embraced and responsibility you eagerly accepted that you didn’t have toward other children.  There is nothing else like it.  You know what I mean, don’t you?

In the human heart God places and unconditional, intense, and exclusive love for our children that is unique to any other relationship.  And although our parenting is tainted by sin, limitations, misunderstandings, etc., underlying it all, we who are parents share a love for our kids and a devotion to them that is unmatched.  Think about this:  if God put this kind of love into our hearts for our children, why would we ever think that his heart toward his children (you and me) would be any different?  In fact, his love for us is far more perfect, far more powerful, and far more beautiful than what we experience.  Our love for our kids is not only a gift from God, but a reflection–a shadow–of the heart of the heavenly Father. You belong to God and, as his daughter, the love he has for you is fierce, unconditional, protective, and unwavering.

“What love the Father has lavished on us that we should be called the children of God!” ~1 John 3:1
